The MID is the official UK record of insured vehicles, run by the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB). Police use it to identify uninsured cars, and you can check your own vehicle's status for free via askMID.

A brand-new policy can take a few days to appear on the Motor Insurance Database. During that window, keep your insurance certificate or schedule as proof of cover. If it still isn't showing after a few days, contact your insurer.

Usually yes. Under Continuous Insurance Enforcement, a registered vehicle must be insured even when parked on the road or a driveway — unless you've formally declared it off the road with a SORN. Otherwise you can be penalised even without driving it.

It's serious: police can seize the vehicle, issue a fixed penalty and points, and courts can impose an unlimited fine and disqualification. Checking is free and takes seconds, so there's no reason to be caught out.
