Can you drive with an expired MOT?
The short answer: no — with two narrow exceptions. Here's what the law says, what it can cost you, and what to do right now if yours has lapsed.
The only two times you can legally drive without an MOT
- Driving to a pre-booked MOT test — you may be asked to prove the booking, so keep the confirmation.
- Driving to or from a garage for repairs required for a booked test.
That's it. Popping to the shops, the school run, "it's only round the corner" — none of it is covered. Police ANPR cameras check MOT status automatically, so an expired certificate is one of the easiest ways to get pulled over.
What it can cost you
- Up to £1,000 fine for driving without a valid MOT.
- Up to £2,500, 3 points or a ban if the vehicle is judged dangerous to drive.
- Invalidated insurance — insurers can reduce or refuse claims on a car that wasn't roadworthy.
- No road tax renewal — you can't tax a car without a valid MOT, which stacks a second offence on top.
MOT expired? Do this now
- Stop driving the car, except to a pre-booked test.
- Check exactly when it expired with our free MOT checker — you'll also see any advisories from the last test that might need sorting before it will pass.
- Book an MOT — and if the last test listed advisories, deal with them first so you don't pay for a failed test.
- If the car needs work before it can pass, that's exactly what we do — as mobile mechanics we come to your driveway, so an un-MOT'd car doesn't need to move at all.
New car? Your first MOT is due at 3 years
Brand-new cars don't need an MOT until the third anniversary of their registration. After that it's every 12 months. You can be fined for a missed first MOT just the same, and it's an easy one to forget — check your due date once a year and put it in your calendar.
Common questions
Is there any grace period after my MOT expires?
No. There is no grace period — the moment your MOT certificate expires, driving the car on a public road is illegal, with two narrow exceptions: driving to a pre-booked MOT test, or driving to a garage for repairs needed for a booked test.
What's the fine for driving without an MOT?
You can be fined up to £1,000 for driving without a valid MOT. If the vehicle is also judged dangerous, the fine can rise to £2,500 with three penalty points or even a driving ban.
Does my insurance still work if my MOT has expired?
Many insurers treat an expired MOT as grounds to reduce or refuse a claim, because most policies require the car to be roadworthy. An accident with no MOT can leave you seriously out of pocket even if the accident wasn't your fault.
Can I tax my car without an MOT?
No — you need a valid MOT to tax your vehicle. If your MOT lapses, you can't renew your road tax until the car passes a new test.
